This is my quick guide to cheaper oil and cheaper fuel.

In the USA gas (petrol) costs between about $2.80 to $3.30 per gallon (4 liters). In UK its now £1.03 per litre, about $8 per gallon. The rest of Europe is only 10-20% less expensive at best.

Most of the cost of fuel in Europe (particularly in the UK) is tax - and of course, every time the price of oil goes up, the tax system reaps the reward of more tax, and more income from the UK's north sea oil reserves.

Oil of course has the same problem - not quite as fluctuating, but just expensive. I've found the cheapest source for Mobil 1 in UK for Mercedes Benz is Costco. They also stock Castrol 10w40.

The best advice for you when having your car serviced is to take the Oil with you. Ask the dealer what oil they use, and how much the car takes when you book it in, and buy some and leave it in the car with a note. Dealers price oil per litre when they sell it to you - a huge saving on servicing costs to be had - and the dealers really don't seem to mind at all.

Petrol or (Gas to the Americans) can also be purchased at a discount using various discount fuel cards - Shell in the UK for instance have a credit card, if you use it at Shell stations, you get a load of discount on the fuel - extra high for the first few months. There are lots of special offers like this to be had.
